World premiere of ‘South Pole’ at the Bayerische Staatsoper

This winter, Thomas Hampson creates the role of Roald Amundsen, the famous Norwegian explorer, in the world premiere of South Pole at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

With music by Miroslav Srnka and text by Tom Holloway, this new opera tells the incredible story of two teams racing each other to reach the South Pole. Rolando Villazón sings the role of Robert Scott, head of the opposing party. Hans Neuenfels directs the production, with Kirill Petrenko leading the Bayerisches Staatsorchester. Enjoy a video preview of this epic commission, featuring interviews with Srnka and Holloway, in addition to background information about the piece via Staatsoper.de.
